The constant drumming of boot heels on hard ground and the panting breath of his comrades filled Kormin’s ears. They had been running for stone knows how long, and still the Orcs closed the ground behind them. Usually Kormin wouldn’t hesitate to fight the Orcs, he is after all a dwarf, but there is this little thing called common sense, and five dwarves attacking upwards of thirty Orcs makes for five dead dwarves. So they ran, stumbling and tripping over the vegetation as they desperately tried to out run the chanting goblins across the grassland of Rohan.

as the chanting of the Orcs grew ever louder desperate thoughts filled his head, can they out run the beasts, will he see his grumpy old pop again, and most of all, who will kill these damn Orcs if they get him. suddenly the ground vanished beneath his feet and Kormin fell head over heels into a concealed stream. the other dwarves, seeing him vanish, managed to keep their dignity and leap into the stream after him.

Spluttering and Coughing, Kormin, hoisted himself to his feet and barked out several fast commands in dwarfish. his small scouting party arranged themselves quickly in the stream, standing shoulder to shoulder, weapons raised, preparing to meet their following doom. Kormin stood on the right end of the line, sliding a bolt into Orcbow. his party was ready to meet their death, but would rather not.

Armondir woke with a start. He sensed it. Evil. He quickly stood up and donned his armor. He grabbed his sword, mounted Grassik and headed off in the direction of the evil at a gallop. The ice cold night air cut at his face like a knife, but Armondir did not notice. He galloped, he needed to find the source of the evil and destroy it. He knew he could do it, he didn't know HOW he knew. He just knew. His sense worked sort of like fear, you know when you are scared, and some things scare you more than others. Some evil is bigger than other evil, and he can tell. He rode over hill after hill, at each crest he stopped for a moment to scan the horizon for any sign of trouble. He rode for hours, whatever he was after must have been right on the edge of his limits but he could tell he was getting closer.

Grassik was tiring as he rose over the top of a large hill. He peered down into the valley below and caught a glimpse of a stream. The stream had corroded away the floor of the valley and created a small gully. In the gully stood five small men, they had formed a line in a final attempt to ward off the evil Armondir had been searching for. Armondir urged Grassik on, one final sprint to the men below. Grassik charged down the hill with the speed of an eagle, as they neared the stream Armondir noticed that these five were not in fact men, they were dwarves. Grassik hurtled down into the gully, crossed the small stream and went up the other side to meet the evil head on. Thirty or more orcs charged straight for him. Armondir hoped the dwarves would not run off and leave him to his doom.

Kormin sighted along his bow waiting for the first Orc head to appear over the top of the gully. There! A twisted orcish helmet poked above the embankment, shortly followed by the rest of the creature’s body and the snarling horde behind. Before Kormin could release his first shaft, there was a clattering of hooves and a rush of some enormous body passing very close to his right shoulder. With a startled exclamation Kormin jumped to his left, crashing into Gudrun (dwarf in the scouting party), his finger squeezed instinctively on the trigger and the bolt flew wide off its intended target.

Kormin watched as the man and his steed charged up the incline straight into the party of Orcs. He stood there a moment deep in rapid thought, should he run to help the stranger or lead his dwarfs to safety while the Orcs were distracted, in another moment his mind was made up. “Forward” he barked in his deep raspy voice and started up the slope after the man. Behind him his dwarfs broke their solitary rank and started up after him. A voice started the battle chant of the dwarves, probably one of the younger ones, and soon the whole group was chanting, “Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!". They moved steadily up the slope, the chant growing louder and more forceful, till they crested the gully and broke like a small wave upon the embattled Orcs and man

The orcs hurdled down on Armondir like a pack of wolves. Armondir drew his sword and prepared for the onslaught. The first orc approached him, his axe raised in the air ready to come down right into Armondir's face. One of the great advantages he had was that orcs are stupid. The orcs axe began to crash down toward him, at the last minute he slid to the side and cut the orcs hand off at the wrist. The axe hit the ground with the hand still attached and Armondir wasted no time, he took his blade and put it through the orcs chest cavity. He glanced back for one quick moment and saw that the dwarves were coming. He nodded in approval.

Kormin hurtled at the forefront of his scouts, his trusty spiked shield locked before him and Tunnel-Cleaver resting at his side. With a earth shuddering crash he slammed his shield point first into his first kill of the day and with a brief gesture with Tunnel-Cleaver he made sure it would stay dead. Wrenching his shield free of the inert body, he returned to the battle. His father’s often said advice echoed in the dusty halls of his memory ”short and to the point” as he stepped in close to Orc to avoid the creatures rusty sword. Seconds later the Orc lay dead at Kormin’s feet, skillfully killed by a short blow to the ribs from the pick end of Tunnel-Cleaver. The fighting seemed to last for hours, but in truth it could only have lasted a few minutes. It was when he could see two of his fellow dwarfs when he realized the Orc’s numbers were lessoning and they might actually survive. He could still hear the roars of the big man and the whinnies of his horse so even their reckless hero might survive the day.

Armondir felled orc after orc with his mighty sword. He slowed only to look back at the dwarves, they could hold their own. He was starting to question whether they had actually needed saving at all. Armondir could see the orcs numbers were dwindling, 15, 10, 5, they began to disperse, running off in different directions. Armondir spurred Grassik after them, he caught one and slid his sword across it's back. The orc fell in pain and Grassik delivered the final blow by stepping hard on its head. A finely trained warhorse. Armondir did not give chase to the remaining orcs, he turned grassik around and trotted back to where he had left the dwarves. When he approached they were all sitting on rocks resting their tired bodies after a long fight. All except one. Armondir approached "Looks like I showed up just in the nick of time."

“Aye lad, we ‘ere in a tight spot back thare” Kormin panted as he slid a new bolt into Orcbow. He quickly sighted, then released the bolt with a reverberant “twwaaang”. Roughly 70 (meters/yards you choose) a fleeing Orc dropped. Kormin turned to look back at their rescuer, “couldn’t let that ‘un get away” he explained, “ ‘e got Fergal across tha face, now Fergal’s wife is gonna boil me for ruining ‘is good looks”. Kormin leaned back upon the rock and looked up into Armondir’s face “ this ‘uns a big ‘un aint ‘e” he half muttered to himself, “Any-tunnel, might I know the name of our benifactor an’ what ‘es doin’ in these parts”

Armondir dismounted from Grassik. He stood about three heads higher than the dwarf he was speaking to. "My name is Armondir Draseer. "I was on my way to Edoras when I sensed an evil presence. I headed in the direction I sensed it from and was lucky enough to reach you in time. What about you? Why are you five all the way out in the middle of the Rohan plains?"

Kormin mentally shrugged when Armondir mentioned “sensing evil”, he didn’t really believe in such things. “Well lad, we were simply takin’ a stroll around our borders, about a month back now, ya know. Making sure everything is quiet like, when this great bloomin’ army moved in behind us and cut us off from home. Long and the the short of it is we’e been movin’ south since to avoid patrols, then we picked up that lot…” he gestures at the mutilated orc forms, “ an’ had ourselves a nice jog, you know the rest”. He dusted off his hands quiet proud of his story telling abilities.

A stifled moan brought Kormin back to reality and reminded him of his leadership duties. “scuse me a moment mate”, with that he turned and stalk quickly through the grass towards Fergal’s rock. He found Fergal sitting cross-legged clutching the little of his face that wasn’t covered by a long black beard. “whats wrong with ya lad?” he demanded in Dwarfish. Fergal removed his hand showing a deep gash that started at his left temple and ended on his right cheek bone. Kormin examined the injury for a second then slap Fergal lightly on the shoulder, “it’s lucky neither of those was your good side”. Fergal gave a pained chuckle and a short nod.

Kormin stepped away, and as he did so, shouted for his second-in-command. “Urf, you mangy son of a troll dropping, where be ya”. A few seconds pause and the slight form of Urf jogged out from behind Armondir vast bulk, Urf paused beside Kormin. “got what hit us?” Kormin asked teasingly, Urf didn’t even react. Instead he started listing the company’s status in his light voice “You; a few dents in your shield, me; Fine, Fergal; you saw, Gudrun; missing a few fingers and his Hammer shaft is broken, Borhild; never made it.” He gestures at the crumpled body where it lay at the top of the gully. “Orc arrow took his throat before he even bloodied one.”

Kormin stared in dismay at Borhild’s body. Borhild was the youngest dwarf in the party, it was his first mission. Kormin turned back to Armondir, “Edoras you say? Well, may we follow you to civilization?”

Armondir listened to the dwarf speak to his party in a weird language which he assumed was dwarven. He then turned around and spoke to Armondir, “Edoras you say? Well, may we follow you to civilization?” Armondir was not going to leave these dwarves to fend for themselves again, he could use the company. "Well sure, I wouldn't mind having a few extra people to keep my mind off the long journey. But I never got your name."

“I am Kormin Jorundr of the Longbeard clan”, Kormin introduces the other members of the party one by one to the big man. “is Edoras far off Lad? Some of us be bleedin’ bad and we need a spot to take care of…” he trails off and gestures at the forlorn pile of armor that was his dead soldier.

"No, it is not far from here." Armondir replied. Armondir mounted Grassik and they began their walk to Edoras. The walk was long and not very exciting. Hill after grassy hill was crested with no sight of the city. Finally, they crested one final hill and they could see the city in the early morning twilight. "There it is." Armondir sighed. He was happy to finally see civilization. "We should be there in a couple hours." He said to the group. He heeled Grassik down the hill and continued on.
